Sugar's Valentine Letter

small meezer with balloonsValentine's Day 2001

Dear Friends of Kansas City Siamese Rescue:

My name is Sugar and I'd like to tell you my story.

One winter, I was very afraid because my family had put me outside, and never let me back in. I don't know why. I had tried to be the very best kitty I could, but they didn't want me anymore. I was cold, hungry and scared, and I didn't know what to do. A kind neighbor inquired why my family would not let me in the house and when I heard them tell her they were tired of me and I could find my own food and somewhere else to live, I was shocked and broken-hearted! I had never had to hunt for my food, or find a place to keep from freezing, let alone find another family that would want me if my family of eight years did not. The kind neighbor then asked if she could find me a new home and she was told "sure, whatever you want, we don't care." They didn't even tell her my real name! The kind neighbor took me home with her and called Kansas City Siamese Rescue. The Rescue took me in, even though my family didn't want me. I felt like there must have been something wrong with me, that I was ugly, bad, or too old. I was so depressed, but my foster mom called me Puss Puss and loved me and fed me anyway, along with all of the other cats that lived there in Kansas City Siamese Rescue's orphanage.

I watched as the other kitties found forever homes with new families of their own to love, and I felt like I would never find that, because there must be something wrong with me. I thought the others were so beautiful and clever. I liked living at the orphanage with all my new friends, and I loved my foster mom, but I wanted a forever home of my own, with a soft down comforter to lay on and a person all my own to love. I saw the excitement when people would come to the orphanage, looking for that special kitty, but I knew no one would ever choose me.

Then, after I had lived at the orphanage for several months, a lady that my foster mom called Mary Beth came to the orphanage. She walked in, and never even looked at any of the other cats! She looked right at me and said, "Oh, who is that?" I was so surprised I forgot to sit a little straighter and try to look smarter and younger! My foster mom said that she called me Puss Puss. Mary Beth didn't care about my temporary name; she just snatched me up in her arms and said that I was the very special cat she had been looking for. She held me close and named me "Sugar" because she said I was so sweet. She said I was perfect! My heart soared!

So I got my wish -- a forever home all my own, with Mary Beth who loves me and takes care of me. And I love her, too! Living with Mary Beth is like having Valentine's Day every day of the year.

But I worry about all the other cats at the orphanage that still haven't found their new homes. They probably feel that there is something wrong with them, too, and there isn't a special family out there for them. I know that in the year 2000, Kansas City Siamese Rescue continued to gain momentum, grew to be a fully licensed shelter with heating and cooling, and found forever homes for over 150 Siamese (and a few other assorted breeds), and that is a really good thing. But the Rescue needs your help so they can keep finding homes for those kitties that come to them, feeling lost and unloved. Everyone needs a sweetheart, especially on Valentine's Day!

Since you know what it's like to find your very best friend at the orphanage, you could help the Rescue and orphanage continue to work. They need old towels to use as kitty beds, bleach for cleaning, but most of all the Rescue needs financial support. The adoption fees they charge don't even begin to pay the advertising bills, electric bills, vet bills for all the testing, spays, neuters and vaccines and medicines that are needed to help the sick and depressed cats that come to them from shelters, the outdoors, and from kind neighbors who care enough to make a phone call.

Please, can you help them? It would mean so much to me, and to all the other kitties that are waiting for their forever Valentine, and to your best friend that is so glad to be found and adopted from Kansas City Siamese Rescue's orphanage.

You have my personal "thank you" for the time you have taken to read my story.

Sincerely,

Sugar

P.S. Don't forget to write KC Siamese Rescue and send family pictures for their album!
